The idea of a "new university" to spark economic growth is not really necessary. New Orleans has several universities. One is a large State university (Univ. of New Orleans), several are HBCU (Xavier, Dillard) and, of course, Tulane. Tulane is, by all measures, an excellent undergraduate institution consistently ranking in the top 50 of US universities. What I see as imperative for NO is to build the things necessary to sustain a vibrant middle class. Pre-Katrina public primary and secondary schools were deplorable, political corruption was widespread, infrastructure was clearly third world-like in nature, and apathy extended across the board. These things must be corrected for NO to attract, and equally important retain, the middle and upper-middle class workers it so desperately needs.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
